Contract Award from United Utilities

Mersey Valley Processing Centre (MVPC)
Shell Green Sewage Sludge Incineration Works Extension Stage 2

Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies in Joint Venture with Costain Ltd are pleased to announce that it has been awarded a contract by United Utilities valued at over £90 Million (€130 Million) for the Mersey Valley Processing Centre (MVPC), a major wastewater sludge incineration scheme at Shell Green in Cheshire.

MVPC is United Utilities' dewatering and incineration centre, located at Widnes in North West England, which currently de-waters digested sludge and operates two streams of incineration to burn approximately half of the sludge received at site.

The new Stage 2 Design and Build project is to replace existing plate presses and increase sludge de-watering capacity using centrifuges to 86,724 TDS maximum throughput, and to increase incineration capacity by adding a third (autothermic) stream of 45,600 TDS pa. The process has three-stage flue gas cleaning using electro-static precipitators (ESP's), two stage wet scrubbing and tertiary polishing with pre-coated PAC/Lime adsorbent bag filter prior to discharge to a new flue stack. This will ensure the facility emissions comply with the PPC permit for the plant.

Energy in the flue gases will be recovered in a waste heat boiler to generate steam and maximise electricity generation through a new steam turbine. The project also incorporates sludge blending facilities, centrate treatment plants, odour control and associated building and civil construction works.

Project completion is programmed for Spring 2010.
