Anaerobic digestion

More and more emphasis is being placed on low operational costs, small footprint, energy from waste and low sludge production. Anaerobic digestion is the solution.

What is Anaerobic Digestion?

Anaerobic micro-organisms (specific to oxygen free conditions) are selected for their ability to degrade organic matter present in industrial effluents. More precisely, organic pollutants are converted into biogas (methane) and a small amount of biosolids.

The energy rich biogas can then be used in the plant process (for boiler-feed and in generators) to produce "green" electricity and heat.

A combined heat and power (CHP) engine is used to convert the biogas into electricity and heat.

Anaerobic biological processes can be used to treat industrial wastewaters (food and beverage, pulp and paper, and chemical industries) or to stabilize organic sludge.

The benefits and technical features

  • Minimal sludge production
  • Limited energy consumption
  • Organic contaminants transformed into "Green energy" (Biogas)
  • Efficient removal of organic matter (up to 90%)
  • Low nutrient needs
  • Biogas production
  • ROCs
  • Supported by government legislation
