The Client

Scottish Water is the UK's fourth largest water utility, responsible for the whole of Scotland and islands around the Scottish coast, including the major cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

The Client's Needs

Balmore site had been in operation since 1971, consisting of microstrainers, disinfection and reservoir storage.

Raw water is pumped to Balmore from Loch Lomond, the largest body of inland water in Britain.

Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies was appointed in 1994 with responsibility for the conceptual and detail process design, the layout and detailed arrangement including civil guidance drawings and the MEICA supply, installation and commissioning of the works.

The new works comprises a low lift pump station followed by 24 rapid gravity filters (arranged in 4 streams of 6) each 134 m2 containing sand and anthracite. Also included are washwater recovery, chemical dosing, pH correction and chlorination facilities.

The works at Balmore were completed by a joint venture partnership between VWS and civil contractors M J Gleeson.
